Not far from our hotel in North Seattle is historical Capital Hill, where you can find the Volunteer Park Conservatory. A fascinating historic landmark, this rare Victorian glass house is a treasure for anybody interested in seeing exotic and endangered plants.
Built back in 1912, the Conservatory has been dedicated for over one hundred years to the collection, conservation, and display of threatened plant species. The collection includes strange and beautiful plants that you would be hard pressed to find elsewhere, including cacti, ferns, bromeliads, and the notorious corpse flower. Tour the five conservatory houses, or book the facilities for a wedding ceremony. Learn more at the site of the Friends of the Conservatory.
Back in 1906, a piece of land on the coast of Lake Union was cleared to create a plant to manufacture coal into gas. By the 1950’s, this plant was rendered obsolete. The city then acquired the site and converted it into a park, turning the old boiler house into a picnic shelter, the exhauster-compressor building into a play barn, and the old steam engines into a public display worthy of the quirky Fremont neighborhood. Thusly was born Gas Works Park.
Gas Works Park is a popular outdoor destination for many people. Offering a great view of both Lake Union and the Seattle city skyline, it’s a great place to take the kids for an afternoon of fun and relaxation within easy reach of our hotel in North Seattle. For more information on the park, see the Seattle parks website.
Who doesn’t love a ferris wheel? They’re a fun distraction, a romantic moment to share with a loved one, or, when you visit the Seattle waterfront, a great way to take in the wonders of the Emerald City’s coastline. At 175 feet tall, the Seattle Great Wheel represents the largest observation wheel on the west coast. It has enough gondolas to hold over three hundred passengers, including the luxurious glass-bottomed VIP cabin. The wheel spins throughout the year, from ten or eleven in the morning to well after nightfall. See the Great Wheel’s website for ticket prices or additional information.
